She's addicted to cupcakes, loves the Muppets, hates mimes, and has a child-sized head. The Kansas native recently jumped from the editorial desk at Outside magazine in Santa Fe, N.M., to public relations at Backbone Media in Carbondale, Colo. Here's her story ... SheJumps: You recently took the jump from editorial at Outside to PR for one of the best outdoor firms in the industry. How has the transition been? Sarah Hubbard: After Outside, I was 100 percent on the NYC magazine editor track, but randomly ran into Nate (Backbone co-founder) on the slopes in Aspen and now here I am. I worked with Backbone in Jackson when I was at Cloudveil, so knew it was a great bunch of people. The transition has been pretty easy since the outdoor industry is a small world and I’m working with all the same contacts. SJ: What's the biggest difference between editorial and PR, in your opinion? SH: Editorial schedules are stressful. There is a lot of hurry up and wait. It goes in waves of calm and chaotic, but PR is more laid-back and consistent. We all sit in the same room and are always throwing out ideas to each other, it's a really creative environment. SJ: Was this a big jump, or did it seem easy? SH: It was a big jump for me. This move was a serious career decision, into a totally different direction. I stressed about choosing NYC or Colorado for a while, but am sure I made the right decision. There's no skiing in New York, what was I thinking? Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket SJ: What big risk have you taken in life that worked out, what risk didn't and what did you learn from it? SH: I have always followed my gut, and it has seemed to work out so far. After college, I moved out West away from everyone in my life, which was scary, but ended up getting a fantastic job, falling in love, and meeting so many incredible people. My biggest risk so far was this move. My gut didn't help me much, and I moved here without knowing anyone, so that has been tough. But it's something I needed. I feel like when you take risks, and set out alone, you learn a lot about yourself. SJ: What's your favorite activity? SH: More than anything, I love skiing, backpacking and eating. I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas and no will power! SJ: How would you describe your personality. What do you like and what would you want to change? SH: I am a total goofball! Thanks to my incredibly inspiring friends, I have a strong sense of who I am and who I want to be down the road. But I am totally a work in progress. I can be fickle, impulsive, and I know a little about lots of things but I’m not an expert on anything which bothers me.
