I don't often write about myself, because there are so many amazing women to feature on this site, but I felt compelled because this story is an example of what we're all about at SheJumps.
My dream has been to write for magazines full time, in the ski industry preferably, and travel as much as possible. In the last year, I've had to reinvent myself as a newspaper reporter into a magazine writer. It hasn't been easy, but it paid off recently. Last week I took a job as staff writer at Ski Racing magazine, which fulfills those goals. I get to travel the world and write about my friends on the U.S. Ski Team (three of which are featured here: Resi Stiegler, Caitlin Ciccone, and Lauren Ross).
Co-founder Lynsey Dyer and I try to walk the walk, even though it may be difficult sometime. She's living the dream as a big-mountain pro skier while I have tried as a freelance writer, and it's been a slow process. We both have nudged our way into the industry, making contacts, getting paid meager wages, all for a dream. Though, the hard work is paying off for both of us. I've cried, she's cried, but we're doing it. She's currently skiing in New Zealand, and I'm about to make a dream job happen.
Both Lyns and I want to pursue SheJumps fulltime, but not at the expense of our personal missions. If we gave in now, we no longer would be walking the walk. I love this community, and one day we hope to commit 110 percent to the mission that has already offered both of us so much strength and friendship.
My buddy, Andy (left, pictured next to my sister) has been a friend for many years. He's always emailing me his dreams, and I love to see him accomplish them. Below, he congratulated me on my new job. We're all trying to figure out our lives, so here's a place you can come to and get support, whether boy or girl.
Van,
A very fitting position for you; a bigger city but an amazing scene nonetheless with phenomenal snow. I took a closer look at SheJumps. It’s an awesome idea. … The list of athletes is super impressive; inspiring to see them all compiled with bios …
I’ve decided to take a quarter of literature and writing courses in London this coming winter to further develop my said ‘capabilities’ before they kick me out of school. In terms of after school, I’m mainly trying to focus on where I want to be; somewhere with a thriving rugged-person-population that I could work for the outdoor industry in some way would be nice.
Keep on inspiring,
Andrew
