A little heads up from the Southern Hemisphere! I've been down in the August winter for the past month skiing and helping run a ski/snowboard camp for Avalonseven. (Check out the blog for all photos, www.myspace.com/avalonseven.)
My last month can be boiled down to a few days of deep pow, mixed with some fun days jumping in the park, lot's of laughs bungee jumping and chasing and catching sheep, running through the not so tropical rain forest, the best chocolate in the world, nightly episodes canvassing the entire Alien series mowing on freshly baked cookies before bed (besides Wednesday nights of course, which were saved for karaoke). I've gotten in a few back flips and a few 360s but the highlight has definitely been this place and the company I've been lucky enough to share it with.
Snowboard kids for one know how to laugh, and sharing that is enough in itself. My favorite soon to be SheJumper Alex George was one of the solo ski campers and the greatest 16 year old ever! She should win an award for putting up with the five 13-year-old boys jumping in her bed every morning with their shoes on to get warm. She even encouraged all of us to jump in the freezing cold Lake Wanaka on our way home from the mountain one day. A lake, we thankfully didn't find out until later, is full of 6-foot-long black eels that happen to hang out right below the dock we jumped from.
We've had one 20-inch dump that made for some fun cliff huck sessions up at TrebbleCone with the incredible Lake Wanaka background. You can tell why “Lord of the Rings” was filmed here. Something about the way the light reflects off all the blue water (which is everywhere) makes for the best light to photograph in all the hemispheres I've been.
Snowpark is quite a scene, a tiny mountain, one chair and supposedly the best half pipe in the world. The word seems to be out, seeing as all the best ski and snowboard athletes are there right now. From Travis Rice to Tora Bright to Tanner Hall to Simon Dumont. The up and coming Jossie Wells is representing his local territory as well. But you wouldn't believe all the ladies down here.
Jen Hudak, Jess Cummings, and Pip Simmonds are only to name a few of the Americans owning the half pipe among a ton of super rippers from Kiwiland to Australia. In fact the story of the day is that there were only 15 male competitors entered in the New Zealand Open and 18 women, nice change I'd say.
Now I'm off to another adventure, the camp is over, kids sent home, and I'm on my way to a heli trip on Mt. Cook for a Men's Journal story. Should be a good one!
