SheJumps co-founder Lynsey Dyer was 16-year-old Alyx George's ski coach this summer in New Zealand. Alyx had quite the time ...
For three weeks in August, I went to Wanaka, New Zealand with a group of boys from Park City, a few boys from my hometown of Jackson Hole and Rob Kingwill, Lynsey Dyer, and Rob LaPier. Hands down, it was the best trip of my life.
At first, I was a little nervous being the only girl other than Lynsey, and barley knowing anyone, but I basically laughed for 21 days straight at my new little brothers. I wish that I could bring them everywhere with me. They pushed me, and then helped me pick up the pieces when it all didn’t work out. They “intrusively danced” on strangers to techno music in front of restaurants and in the ski lodge, they got soaking wet in rivers and the Tasman sea in the middle of winter, they crawled over the “DO NOT CROSS” rope at the Fox Glacier and proceeded to shoot rocks at the glacier, and they shredded their hearts out everyday. These boys made me laugh so many more times than I could ever count.
One of the coolest experiences of all was being able to ski with the one and only Lynsey Dyer. She let me tag along with her everywhere and introduced me to all her friends. For starters, Lynsey is not only gorgeous, but kicks ass at skiing and is representing for girls all over the world. She would get so excited about the littlest things that it made me realize how you can get so caught up in the happenings and drama of life and forget to stop and look around you and just smile. She told us to celebrate our mistakes, so every time someone in our small family made a mistake, we all cheered and clapped for them. We also had laughing circles. We would all start laughing at the same time, about nothing, and then by the end of it, we were all laughing so hard, but no one really knew why. To sum it up, if I could have a big sister, and choose anyone, I would choose Lynsey Dyer.
One day in particular, I realized that I had really fallen in love with skiing. I hiked up to the top of this little peak with Lynsey at Cardrona, and we were laying down on the snow peering over the ledge trying to plan our lines. I’m not gonna lie, I was a little nervous at first, but once I got over it, I was so glad that I did it. That adrenaline rush just kept me going. Someone told us that it sounded like we were at “hippie camp” where we all “sit around and dreads each others hair,” but first of all, they are hair wraps, so if you are going to insult us, as least do it right, and second of all, this camp, whatever you want to call it, was one of my most memorable experiences.
Skiing is one of my favorite things in the world, and doing it with people who share your passion makes it that much better. I hope to continue to progress and get to a point one day where I won’t look at Snowpark and want to crawl inside a hole. I hope to get to a point where I can look at something and just think, “Yup, I can ski that!” I hope to keep skiing a huge part of my life. Pushing myself and putting myself in new and uncomfortable situations is part of what keeps me in tune. Reading the articles about all of these amazing women taking risks and doing what they love is so inspiring to me. I congratulate all of them and wish them all the best of luck as they continue on their journeys.
