Jumper Alex George wins big-mountain comp

Comment on this Post PhotobucketAlex George recently won her first big-mountain contest among 16-18 year olds in Canada. She's having fun and living the dream … On Jan. 9, I headed up to Rossland, British Columbia, with three teammates and my coach Rob LaPier to compete in my first big-mountain competition EVER: The Junior Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships. The first two days we pretty much shredded trees and rode pow. It was AWESOME! The night before qualifiers, I called Lynsey Dyer and one of the things that she told me that really stuck with me was, “The judges just want to see you having fun doing what you love.” The day of qualifiers I visualized my run over and over until I thought that I could ski it backwards. As I got ready to go, my coach said, “Its just another day in Jackson.” I took off and don’t remember a thing. I got to the bottom and the adrenaline was still pumping so hard. That night the judges announced who was going to compete the following day. They started with the last place and counted down to first. As they counted down I panicked. I kept replaying my run over and over in my head. Finally, they called my name second to last. I was in 2nd place headed into finals. The next day, I woke up ready to charge. After a few weather complications and the judges relocating to on-course, the girls in my group started going. My teammates from Jackson laughed with me at the top for a while to help loosen me up and relieve some nerves. Captain Jack counted down and I was off, skiing my line as hard as I could, and so happy to be there. I got to the bottom and was completely out of breath. I think that I forgot to breathe while I was skiing. I was so proud of myself at the bottom that I decided that it didn’t even matter if I just came in last. I had so much adrenaline and so much fun that I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face. Photobucket That night at awards, I watched my teammate win her division and was so happy for her. When they got to my division, they counted down from 6th place all the way to 1st. As they got closer and closer to number 1, my name still hadn’t been called. They got down to number 2, and I was the only one left. I won the 2008 Junior Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships for my division, which was 16-18 year olds. I was STOKED! Big THANK YOU to Rob LaPier, Trevor Hiatt, Tucker Mead, and Jake Wade for keeping me excited to ski and always with a smile on my face. Lynsey Dyer, what can I say? You inspire me in so many more ways than I could ever list. I don’t know where to start. I LOVE YOU! And of course, my AWESOME parents for everything! Follow your dreams!
