Michelle Parker, 21, (pictured right) may be an adorable tomboy from Squaw Valley USA, but as an athlete, she’s hardcore. She has made a name for herself in the world of freestyle and big-mountain skiing by sending it all over the place so she doesn’t necessarily like the girlie nickname “Mich-ay-nay,” but she’s getting it. After hearing Van-ay-nay from her so many times, it seemed natural to stick it to her during “Road trip of Radness” to Aspen last weekend. Destination: The Meeting.
Aspen/Snowmass, per usual, puts on a fabulous show whatever it may be (e.g. X Games) and The Meeting was no exception. It’s an off-season reunion of ski industry athletes, videographers, and journalists to watch a slew of the season’s best ski and snowboard movies. Obsessed ski fans were everywhere and so were athletes such as Mich-ay-nay, Pep Fujas, Tanner Rainville, Chris Davenport, Mark Abma, Peter Olenick, Steele Spence, Grete Eliassen, Angeli Vanlaanen, Marie-France Roy, and many more.
After a seven-hour ride from Park City, which included lots of laughing and one-upping each other with crass to brass stories, the Road trip of Radness all-girls crew (that also included photog Anna De Masi and friend Jessika Winderl) made it to the Alpenblick condo in Aspen at 2 a.m. We slept in the next day, did some yoga, and then got ready for The Meeting. The films started at 5 p.m., but the first night’s headliner show was Oakley’s all-girl-athlete flick “Uniquely.” Most people would agree that it was superbly edited, while telling a story about what makes Oakley’s athletes—from snowboarding to surfing—well, “unique.” We were proud of our dear friend and “jumper” Grete Eliassen and Angeli VanLaanen, who were a couple of the athletes sending it in the film. They are amazingly unique, and without going into great detail, can be summed up as “beautiful people.”
Do you ever get that happy feeling that makes you feel like you could do anything in the world and puts a humongous smile on your face? That’s the feeling I got while watching these girls in the movie do what they love to do. This movie will be running constantly at my SLC house during the winter.
After the main shows, The Meeting moved to Belly Up where party time commenced to the backdrop of more ski movies. It got a little crazy, but not quite like the next night where, for those that stuck around late, went into dance frenzy. Eliassen was in fine form busting some of her notorious booty-shaking moves with good friends Mich-ay-nay—or as Grete likes to call her: M.P.—and Marie-France.
For those who recovered, there was another day of movies, with one of the headliners being MSP’s “Claim.” Mich-ay-nay, had a small cameo in the intro where she punched one of her buddies in the balls. She only filmed with MSP in Squaw Valley for about a week last season, but did so well that the MSP team invited her to film with them this season. Soon we will be beaming with a happy smile while watching her live the dream. Yay!!
Overall, The Meeting and Road trip of Radness lived up to its name, and maybe Mich-ay-nay’s new nickname will stick, too. To check out the "Uniquely" teaser, CLICK HERE!
