SheJumps isn't a site for actual ski jumpers, but we like to include a few jumper "jumpers" not because they literally jump but because they figuratively are "jumping" to achieve their dreams. Lindsey Van is one of them, a 13-time national champion on the U.S. Ski Team. She is a huge supporter of SheJumps, and recently chose the new 501c3 organization as her charity for the Silver Bean Coffee athlete blend program. Fellow teammate Shannon Bahrke (2002 Olympic moguls silver madalist) created the company and is making U.S. Ski Team athlete blends. If you purchase the Lindsey Van and Jessica Jerome (our other jumper "jumper") blends, part of the proceeds go to SheJumps. The program hasn't quite been launched yet, but we will keep you posted. The coffee is amazing, blended and packaged by Shannon herself (along with her business partner and fiancee). The following bio is what SBC will use to promote Lindsey. My name is Lindsey Van, though many people just call me “Van.” I’m a ski jumper. I love to fly. When I was 7, I gave the sport a try when my family moved from Detroit, Michigan, to Park City, Utah, to live in a ski community. I was hooked by the speed, the rush, the adrenaline. My whole family enjoyed ski jumping, and my twin brother, Brandon, jumped competitively for three years.
But I stuck with it and started training year round at age 10, and have been traveling and competing internationally since then. I hold the North American jump record at 171 meters, and have consistently been ranked in the top 10 internationally. Some say I’m one of the top jumpers in the world, but I don’t like to boast. I just like to fly.
I graduated from Park City High School in 2003, and began attending the University of Utah in the fall of 2004. No, I have not graduated yet, but I am on the accelerated 10-year plan. I am a junior studying Exercise Sports Science, and I hope to do something in the sports world when I graduate, likely coaching. I really enjoy watching kids “get it” for the first time. I believe more women need to be involved in coaching, especially in a sport that is growing for females. This is why I support the nonprofit SheJumps as my charity for Silver Bean Coffee; its mission is “to increase participation of women in outdoor activities through mentorship and coaching from professional and recreational outdoor female athletes.” I’ve been fortunate to experience ski jumping, and I would love to help other young women experience my sport and the benefit of outdoor recreation in general.
In my spare time, I like to spend time with friends, travel, and participate in many other sports such as skiing, telemark skiing, water skiing, hiking, biking, soccer, volleyball, and yoga. I have really been into yoga in the past five years, and when I sustained a knee injury last winter I found it to be a great release and distraction for me as I was recovering. Since then I have been rehabbing, and working at Alpine Sports Medicine in Park City as a Physical Therapist Aide. I enjoy helping people get healthy again, and return to sport.
I started training and jumping again in August, and have begun to compete again as well. It’s nice to be back to the sport I love, but it was also good to have the much-needed break. I am looking forward to the winter season and our first World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, in February 2009.
