Hi,
I just wanted to say thank you!!!! For creating such an inspirational website with a unique mission. I started browsing the website this summer after a friend told me about it and I became obsessed. I am a racer and on my ramshackle ski team. There are only 3 other girls and it's hard to find an identity sometimes in a sport dominated by guys. Reading about the stories of other women doing things that I hope to do in my life makes me feel empowered and excited for what's to come.
I am from Fairbanks, AK, and the ski scene for racing is not supported very much. After a disappointing season of not meeting many of my goals, I considered moving to Girdwood, home of Alyeska, where I could surround myself with skiing. I brought the idea to my parents and they said if I could pay for most of it and graduate high school in December, that I had permission to do it. I had a lot of trouble deciding. I love Fairbanks and have lived here all my life and it is my senior year and I would need a lot of money to pay for "most of it." Well, this was about the time I started reading SheJumps and it was because of the things I read on your website that I ultimately decided to take the jump. I realized that if I wanted to ever reach my potential with ski racing and skiing that I would have to move. I have now earned the money needed by being a paid intern with the Obama Campaign in Fairbanks and working as a lab assistant at the university and doing other odd jobs.
We just finalized the lease on the cabin that my parents and I bought in Girdwood. For school, I am graduating in December by taking several classes by correspondence and taking classes at the university along with a full high school schedule so i can graduate early. I am moving into my cabin January 1 and I can't wait for a semester of intense, focused training on the slopes everyday and just shreddin Alyeska on the many pow days. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you because everything is becoming a reality and it is hard to believe that I was ever scared about making this decision. I have had support from friends, family, and coaches like never before and it has made me look forward to the next time I get to really change my life and go for the jump.
What you gals are doing amazing: Being able to live your dreams and inspire others in the process. I can only hope that one day I will be able to do the same. Keep up the great work!! Thank you! and have a great 08-09 winter season! hope for lots of snow and good pow days!
