Heather hearts hats
By Vanessa Pierce
Heather hearts hats.
"They are like T-shirts or shoes," she said. "You can't have enough." Heather Amaryllis and her business partner founded Shred Alert 17 years ago in the Northwest.
Their vision was to create products that would enhance the outdoor lifestyles of people like themselves. The company began with a $5,000 "hand-shake" loan from a friend and morphed into an award-winning hat and accessories company.
Heather has designed many lines of hats from street casual to South American influenced styles.
The tiny sports mecca of Hood River, Ore., was chosen as the ideal setting for testing and developing the unique line. Located in the spectacular Columbia River Gorge with the Cascade Mountains to the north and south, Pacific Ocean to the west, and desert to the east, the area offers virtually limitless opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Heather now has full ownership of Shred Alert. She is the mother of three (Jessica, 7, Rio, 9, Noa, 11), a former telemark champion, and kitesurfer.
Heather said starting her own business didn't seem like much of a risk because she had grown tough skin growing up in a "dirt poor" family. It only takes a vision to start a business, Heather said. "I really think that if you put your mind to something, your path opens," she said.
From making the first product in her laundry room 17 years ago to becoming an award winning company recognized in the competitive outdoor industry for our innovative designs, product quality, and company integrity (Heather's designes have twice received the Malden Mills Apex awards for design excellence), she still loves to create hats and accessories.
Shred Alert products can be found in outdoor sports stores around the country including REI, Christy Sports, Paragon Sports, City Sports, Scheels, Boyne Country Sports, and many more. For more information, visit ShredAlert.com.
