SheJumps Updates from our Regional Directors!

Comment on this Post

We've been keeping ourselves awfully busy! Read about what SheJumps has been up to in NorCal, Jackson, Portland, and Utah:

NORCAL:

SheJumps NorCal is just getting started.  The ski tuning clinic with Pamela Warman was our 1st event and was well attended. It was such a success, South Shore Snow wants to hold more women only tuning clinics. Check out pictures from the event here.

We also entered a team into the Disabled Sports USA Far West Ability Challenge at the end of March - 8 female skiers and snowboarders signed up to compete with the SheJumps team and raise money for the adaptive skiing program in North Lake Tahoe.  We are one of the top fundraisers at this point having raised well over our goal of $1600!

Next up, we are planning a backcountry basics day (now that Tahoe has snow!) and some basic ski meet ups.  Lots of momentum growing, and we are very excited!

JACKSON:

So.... from the JH side...

SheJumps Jackson Hole kicked off the ski season with a once a week free ski conditioning class sponsored by Jackson Hole Health & Fitness. The class is a great way to meet a community of women who enjoy playing in the snow all while getting in shape, avoiding injury and pushing your mind and body.

SJJH also put on a free avalanche awareness class sponsored by Jackson Hole Mountain Guides and taught by our fabulous , experienced & knowledgable guide/Instructors Aimee Barnes & Erica Engle. The class was a two hour slide show presentation and chat that was super informative. It's a great season to be aware, informed and thinking about traveling safely in the backcountry!

SJJH also started the first monthly "Get the girls out" all girls ski day. Our aim is to have women from all of the country and world to get together to get outside in the spirit of building community and play! Once a month until the end of the ski season SheJumps will encourage women all over the world to get outside together on the mountain in any fashion they choose.

PORTLAND:

We kicked off the ski season with a "She Jumps Into Winter" Fundraiser in Hood River. We held it a local tap house (Pint Shack) and featured Sherpa Cinema's All.I.Can movie premiere. We raised a good amount of money, and had an amazing turnout. According to some sources, we were the talk of the town for awhile! We couldn't have done it without our awesome donors: Native, TREW, Green Element Clothing, ADIDAS, Cilo Gear, New Deal Distillery, etc... For more on that event, and for pictures, here's a recap: http://eepurl.com/hiz_o

Following our fundraiser: Vinyasa yoga with fellow jumper Britt Howe, bouldering nights at the Circuit Gym, wax and wine night, ski days, a backcountry hut trip in the Mount Hood Wilderness Area, and the Get the Girls Out Day last weekend. We had a avalanche awareness and backcountry safety class scheduled, but it was canceled due to inclement weather :( All that in addition to our true "social" nights where we just get together and have a few drinks -- it's part of what makes the SJ PDX chapter so special, we're all close friends too!

We're currently looking to set up volunteer opportunities with Big City Mountaineers (Summit for Someone), and reschedule our avalanche awareness class. This coming spring we'll compete in the Pole, Pedal, Paddle in Bend, OR, and plan some great backpacking trips!

UTAH:

Utah is Jumpin' like crazy!  We are so excited at the growth and exposure we've gained in recent months.  This past fall our events included a meet and greet, two days of Jump Camp with Fly Freestyle at the Utah Olympic Park Water Ramps, rock climbing and canyoneering!  In December the Utah SheJumps Director Hannah Whitney was interviewed on Comcast Newsmakers which airs on CNN in Utah.  And during Utah's Backcountry Awareness week there was another Girafficorn sighting on KSL 5 News!  Phasing into winter we were able to expand our programs with the Utah Avalanche Center by adding the first annual Women's Advances Avalanche Workshop on top of our Free Beacon Clinic (~70 participants) and Women's 101.  All of these were a huge success with very positive feedback to continue improving these events.  In January we were lucky enough to be joined by Jenna Mahaffie who interned with us from Colby College in Maine.  During her stay a great group of ladies, some new to SheJumps and others who've been involved for some time, got together for a fun 'Wine and Waxing' night to get our skis and boards ready for the snow thats finally showing up!  She was also instrumental in organizing the SheJumps Pirate Happy Hour and the Winter 2012 Outdoor Retailer Show with Flylow.  Many SheJumps supporters gathered to share some brews and catch up on the world of females in the outdoors.  Many SJ Trucker Hats, water bottles and t-shirts were sold!  Thanks you so much Jenna for seeking us out and helping us along our way!

On February 11th was the international and incredibly successful SheJumps 'Get the Girls Out' Day!  Here in Utah ladies got together to meet new faces, have fun, and enjoy the mountains at Alta, Snowbird, Park City AND Snowbasin!  We look forward to making this a monthly event and aim to extend it into spring and summer months with any range of activities such as hiking, biking, climbing, paddling, or ANYTHING outdoors!  Coming up on February 21st we're having a Women's Snow and Avalanche Round table discussion with professional women ski patrollers, avalanche forecasters, guides and athletes to cover current conditions and careers in these fields.  Other events we are looking forward to include most notably the 4th Annual (S)heJumps Into the Canyon at Alta!  We are so excited and motivated by the continuing success of this program with Boys and Girls Clubs in the Salt Lake Valley.  We will be in need of dedicated and smiling volunteers on Saturdays March 3rd, 10th, 24th and 31st.  The 31st will be dedicated as the Billy Poole Memorial Ski Day.  Plans are being made for a Full Moon Snowshoe Tour on March 8th with the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation.  We've also brainstormed about a home-made granola bar and tutu making party!  Don't forget that ALL these things involve hula hoops and pogo sticks...of course!  There are so many great activities to be organized that we are ALWAYS in need of dedicated and motivated volunteers so please contact Hannah if you'd like to get more involved!
