Ullr Girl contest day 1: Stompede

Comment on this Post "So Lyns," I said, "what was the best thing about today?" Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket "I didn't die," she said. In fact she was psyched after being one of two girls to slide to the tippy-top of a topsy looking 45-degree angle fun box, though she had never done any sort of rail before. I was proud, because she rose to the occasion and was able to perform solidly in an event she had never competed in before. "We need to go," I said at 7:45 a.m. We were definitely running late. She had missed inspection of the venue the day before and this was no mini mountain event. It was the Whistler/Blackcomb TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival "Stompede." My pro skier friend (and SheJumps co-founder) was invited to compete in the If Ullr Was a Girl contest with a prize purse of $25,000, which she plans to give to the SheJumps foundation fund if she wins. The contest is during the 10-day festival and includes three events: rail jam, big-mountain, and art contests. Lynsey is a big-mountain skier, so competing against some of the best park girls in the world – like Sarah Burke, Grete Eliasson, Jess Cumming, and Meg Olenick – was just a bit scary."Oh you'll be laughing at us in the big-mountain contest," said Olenick when we ran into her and Grete grabbing breakfast before "warm up." All of the girls seemed super supportive, and out to have fun, which was comforting when Lynsey got a two-minute inspection (because we were late of course) of the venue that included everything that looked intimidating and nothing that looked fun. Lynsey said Sarah was helpful. "Do the box," she said, "that's easy." So she followed her advice, and then perched atop the 30-foot upward slide, turned around, and came back down. Grete was the only other girl to make it to the top of that thing, and she won the qualifier. Lynsey was beaming when I saw her afterward. "That was fun," she admitted. She had a solid performance, four runs all skied with more confidence than the last. She even busted a 360 off one of the kickers. She took a jump, literally, and came away knowing she had done her best and at least given it at try. She didn't make it through to the final yesterday, but it still was a win for her. Tonight she will shine in the art event at 8 p.m. It's bound to be a blast, and she has a special treat in store.
