SheJumps works with Alta Ski Area to sponsor four camps in January. (S)heJumps into the Canyon camps is a “start-to-finish” curriculum for its participants, that include two classroom sessions to familiarize the teens with the gear, technique, and goals of the program. Local professional and recreational skiers volunteer their time to coach at these camps as well, creating a very unique atmosphere for these local teens that have never stepped into skis before. (S)he Jumps Into The Canyon was established in 2009 to work with as many Boys & Girls club teens as possible in order to inspire them in the mountain setting by offering creative avenues for physical expression that are completely free for them to try. Since it’s founding, the program has provided a month long opportunity for 9-17 year olds to learn about fitness and skiing fundamentals. Photos by Jeremy Koons and Re Wikstrom
In 2008, a crew of Salt Lake City "Jumpers" got together to ski a line in Little Cottonwood Canyon to benefit breast cancer research. It started with a two hour hike, then a camp out in the snow (first time anyone had snow camped), and ended with an attempt at "Hypodermic Needle." Due to conditions and timing, it didn't happen but their was no lack of a challenge, fun, and great comaraderie. Photos: Re Wikstrom
The Boulder premiere, Feb., 23, 2010, of the first all-girls ski movie, Catch Us If You Can, produced by Sweden-based Generation Flinga, was a hit! There was many "oohhs" and "ahhs" from the crowd of about 50, while they watched Rachael Burks, Lynsey Dyer, Stina Jakobsen, Janette Hargin, Sara Orrensjo, Jennifer Farde and Anja Person huck themselves off cliffs and crush pillow lines. It was truly inspiring. Ski like a girl! A big thanks to our host, outdoor DIVAS, the first all-womens gear shop in the nation, located on Pearl Street in Boulder, plus Fortitude Skis and BaseCamp Packs.
SheJumps is about building a community of women that live for the outdoors and inspire others to use our natural environment to gain a love of life and adventure. These are just some of the "Jumpers" that make up SheJumps.
SheJumps' goal is to get women in the outdoors, so here are some images that may inspire you to get off the couch and play in our environment.
This year at Outdoor Retailer, SheJumps and Flylow Gear partnered up to throw a pirate themed happy hour. Needless to say, the event was a huge success. Read the blog post about it here!
If my feelings are any indication of the rest of the skiing population’s, waxing skis is like doing chores. Smashed somewhere between taking out the trash and cleaning the toilet. We only do it because we have to. If we’re lucky, we can pay someone else to do it for us. If we’re not that lucky, we drink wine. When Brittany and I first got together, we shared one common vision: bring SheJumps to Portland. On February 11, 2011 our dream became a reality as women transplanted here from Alaska, Utah, and the East coast wandered into my living room, eager to make friends and check “Wax skis!” off their to-do lists. —Laura Grieser, SJ Portland chair
New to the SheJumps programming in 2010, this awesome camp is held at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, UT. In tandem with Fly Freestyle, we offer women of all ages and abilities the chance to work on their ski tricks like 360s and backflips. Put on that winter gear and get in the pool! Keep checking in to find out when the next camp will be held.
For three years now, SheJumps has held a winter camping experience for our jumpers. This year, we took 14 girls to the Castle Peak Yurt in the Uintah Wilderness (Utah). Due to space requirements, some girls had to sleep in a tent, which is part of our mission to introduce girls to winter camping and teaching about the outdoors. We skinned up 6.5 miles to the yurt, skied Castle Peak (10,300 ft), dug snow pits, and even a snow cave. It was a blast! Photos: Jill Adler, freelance writer/photographer.
Our mission at SheJumps is to plan events that get women psyched on the outdoors. In the last year (2009-10), we've put on two movie premieres in the Salt Lake City area ("Catch Us If you Can!" all-women ski movie) and June's "Women of Dirt: Awesome Land" all-women mountain bike movie. It's our goal to bring women together to get psyched on sports, meet new girls to hit the trails with, and enjoy a good film.
Over Labor Day weekend, SheJumps invited its top volunteers and consultants to an amazing camping retreat in Zion National Park. Fourteen women from California, Washington, and Utah converged for some canyoneering, hiking, and teaching—plus eating gourmet food cooked up by Claire Smallwood. Also, backflips, yoga, and hairwraps were on the schedule. The women discussed future programming, and SheJumps solidified its volunteer base to bring its "Jumpers" more in networking, sports management support, and programming to introduce more women to the outdoors.
