Full name? Elizabeth Devon Daley
Where do you call home? Still to be determined...
When and where were you when you fell in love with snowboarding? I feel like I'm constantly falling in and out of love with snowboarding and splitboarding. I have an amazing pow turn, an epic steep descent or just a really fun day with good friends and I'm in love. Then I'm stuck on a flat glacier, endlessly poling my way out of an epic infinity. Or I have a really bad fall or am riding poorly and I hate it. The polarity of experiences to be had really balance the sport and make it unpredictable and enjoyable for me. A day out shredding can never be totally euphoric if you don't have those really bad days and experiences to contrast them to. Every time I have one of those moments or really good days I fall in love with snowboarding all over again.
What is the story of how you got into climbing? Well, I never climbed in Washington because everyone I knew climbed at the gym and I vehemently opposed participating in gym business. I hated the seemingly robotic, anti-social people on machines sweating into the air I was breathing. The weather was such crap that no one I knew at the time climbed outside. I met a boy my last year of college who introduced me to climbing outside with loud techno music and energy malt liquor (drank very responsibly). I was hooked. Over the past three and a half years I have grown to take it more seriously and have developed a profound addiction to climbing harder and higher.
When did the two sports really start to meld together for you in the form of mountaineering? I spent two seasons in Chamonix and without rock climbing skills in those mountains you're screwed. Luckily I had some alpine climbing experience under my belt before living there. A lot of the snowboard descents would involve a technical rock scramble and/or rappel. Also, getting yourself out of a crevasse involves rope techniques which are essential when riding in Cham. Sometimes it wouldn't snow for a couple weeks and not having a job in Cham, I occupied myself with other hobbies such as mixed and alpine climbing.
If you could have any meal on top of a peak, which meal would it be and which peak? I always feel like I'm going to hurl at the top of peaks. But I'd like to puke a'top the something super exotic like the Shipton Spire in Pakistan. I'd also like to bag Mt. Blanc and the Matterhorn. A fat, juicy, organic, grass-fed, 1/2 lb cheeseburger, fries and an extra chocolatey shake would be extraordinary if I wasn't feeling like I was going to vomit.
What's the scariest thing you've ever done on snow? Snowboarding over the blind, icy rollover at the top of the Coleman Headwall, Mt. Baker. It was super windy and all I could see was the glacier floor 2,000+/-ft below.
What's the scariest thing you've ever done that has nothing do with the outdoors? Giving one of my final presentations in college. I am a horrible public speaker, I absolutely loose it!
Do you have a mantra or saying that keeps you calm/fired up/focused/motivated? Not particularly, but these are some motivational quotes that kind of define my mindset: "Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. ACT! Action will delineate and define you." - Thomas Jefferson. "Either run the day or the day runs you."- Jim Rohn.
What accomplishments in your life are you really proud of? Some first women's snowboard descents in the Cascades, getting my first full-time job this season,
What is your next big goal? I'm really looking forward to shredding some Utah blower this season and conquering on a road trip this spring, entitled: "Volcano Shock & Awe 2012". Hoping to shred some cool lines and perhaps get some first snowboard descents.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully with a job as a paramedic, guide or firefighter. Any other ideas anyone? Making skrill and killing it on my time off. Hopefully I'll have all the gear and skills I need to get rad whenever I please.
What great thing would you dare to accomplish if success was the only possible outcome?Ooh, that's a good one! Can I have multiples? I would have to say, first woman to speed board the Matterhorn or the North Face of the Eiger. Something silly like that.
