Meet SheJumps Board Member: Laura Borner

Updated: Oct 31

We are thrilled to welcome Laura Borner to the SheJumps Board of Directors!

Laura co-founded Peaks Foundation, a nonprofit that utilized mountain climbing events to raise over $1 million for girls & women, education, healthcare, and the environment. She has dedicated her career to sustainable change, using communications and storytelling to drive positive impact. Laura wants to see SheJumps become more visible and continue advancing gender equality. She is currently working as a Senior Executive Communications Manager at Microsoft and believes that by leveraging technology and innovation, we have the opportunity to better the planet. Her network spans tech, travel, and philanthropic efforts.

She is passionate about conserving wild places and happiest in nature with her husband and two kids. In her freetime, Laura loves a good tennis match (she’s okay watching but would prefer to be the one playing), loves tidepooling and hiking with her family, and planning trips to far off locations. She values a good view and a good cup of coffee, preferably together.

Q: Place of work, title, location.

A: Microsoft, Sr. Executive Communications Manager, Washington

Q: Why did you join SheJumps as a board member?

A: Why not?! I love everything about the mission and can see only positive benefits from supporting girls and women to engage in the outdoors. We can reach new heights by bridging these two together. LFG!

Q: What goal of the SheJumps Strategic Plan is the most important to you?

A: Do I have to pick one? I suppose “Expanding accessibility and inclusivity of SJ programs, offerings, and community for girls and women of all backgrounds.” I believe that SheJumps will likely make the most impact by expanding reach and including a wider audience. I find this area to be super exciting.

Q: What do you hope to contribute to the SheJumps Board of Directors?

A:  I would love to support SheJumps by amplifying their efforts and growing thoughtfully.

Q: What is your vision for SheJumps?

A: I would love to see SheJumps as a brand that is recognizable and for alumni to become a community that empowers one another and continues supporting one another beyond a one-off event or interaction. When women work together, we are unstoppable!

Now, it’s time for the lightning round:

Q: Outdoor activity of choice (pick one, two if you must)?

A: Hiking or stand up paddle boarding

Q: Who inspires you to go outside and why?

A: My kids. They love a good camping trip. My daughter loves foraging - finding huckleberries, picking wildflowers, and dipping her feet in any body of water. My son loves fishing, catching snakes, lizards, frogs, or anything else that moves! I love when one of them points out a good view, a nice sunset, a beautiful flower…. It shows that they have an eye for the inherent beauty of our planet, and I appreciate that so much.

Q: Where is your favorite place to go outside or on an adventure?

A: Either the San Juan Islands or the Serengeti. The San Juans for the fern-laden paths, the smell of the pacific ocean, the tide pools, and the orca whales. The Serengeti for the vast openness, the endless wildebeest, over 500 species of birds, and the stars.

Q: How has the outdoors benefited your health and overall physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing?

A: Nothing quite compares to the feeling of standing on top of a mountain, gazing up at the stars, or staring out at the endless ocean. That feeling of being so small is somehow so empowering and grounding. Nature has always been my favorite place to escape and my place to recharge.

Thanks, Laura!
