Updated: Jul 2, 2020

Updated, October 31, 2019

The winners of the 2019-2020 Ikon Base Pass from SheJumps are:

Annette Diggs

Monserrat Alvarez

Kiana Busey

Thank you to everyone who participated!

The mission of SheJumps is to increase participation of ALL women/girls in the outdoors. As you may have seen in our Outdoor CEO Diversity pledge post, we are focused on increasing diversity in the outdoors.

One way we can help is to remove the financial barriers that prevent women and girls from getting outside. So when a generous donation of Ikon passes were donated to SheJumps, we knew we wanted to give them to women of color. We feel that representation matters, so we want to provide the tools to grow the participation of WOC in snowsports.

Now, we want to hear from our community and are looking for nominations of someone you know that has wanted to get into skiing but the cost has been a limitation.

What’s an Ikon Pass?

An Ikon Pass gives skiers access to 41 resorts owned and partnered with Alterra Mountain Company. With the Ikon Pass, you get access to 12 unlimited resorts and up to 5 days skiing at 28 other resorts.

Giving back to Snowpack Scholarships applicants

In addition to the three passes we are giving away via nominations (details below), SheJumps will be providing four Ikon passes to candidates who applied for (but did not receive) last year’s Snowpack Scholarship. We went back through the applications and chose four deserving women to receive free Ikon Base passes. These women need additional skiing experience to gain skills and safely approach the backcountry. We are honored to provide that access with the gift of an Ikon pass for the 2019-2020 ski season.

The Snowpack scholarship program was created in partnership with Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) volunteers, and made possible with support from K2 Skis and Fremont Brewing. Through the scholarship, a total of 30 women attended AIARE Level 1 courses from Mountain Madness guiding service last winter. Of the 30 women, 50% of scholarship recipients identified as women of color.

We're excited to announce the Snowpack Pale Ale Scholarship applicants receiving Ikon Passes. A big congratulations to Roxana G., Moira J., Leslie M., and Doris W.

Now we are looking for three additional women to receive an Ikon pass. We want to provide this opportunity for someone who may not have had it in the past.

How to nominate

Calling all nominations. There’s no doubt about it, skiing is a predominantly white, luxury sport. While we recognize that access to skiing can be hard regardless of your race, ethnicity, or background we are using this opportunity to actionably promote the sport we love so much (skiing/snowboarding) to the most underrepresented groups in the snowsports industry—black, indigenous, women of color.

You can nominate someone (or yourself) HERE. Please see additional details below.

Nominations are now open from October 15, 2019 12:00 am PST through October 25, 2019 11:59 pm PST.

Selection process

We’ll be selecting three nominees in addition to four of last year’s Snowpack applicants.

We’re collaborating with Teresa Baker, the founder of the Outdoor Pledge, and Brooklyn Bell, professional athlete, artist, and activist, to provide access to someone who has the interest but not the resources.

A small panel, including Teresa and Brooklyn along with SheJumps DEI committee members, will read through all the submissions and narrow down the nominations based on demonstrated need and passion for skiing and the outdoors. A SheJumps representative will then contact the nominees to see if they are interested in receiving an Ikon Pass for the season. In the event a nominee is not interested or does not respond within the designated timeframe, SheJumps committee will choose from the runner-up list.

As part of the nomination process, please fill out the following fields in the form for your nomination to be considered. Below are some examples of information we’re looking for:

  • How does this individual participate/support their local community?

  • Does this individual participate in the outdoor community. If so, how?

  • Are there any communities or organizations the individual volunteers or belongs to?

  • Why do you feel this person should receive the Ikon pass? (250 words or less)

The form links to the complete giveaway terms and conditions.
