SheJumps Avalanche 1 Course in Idaho

SheJumps has partnered with Sun Valley Trekking to offer a women’s only Avalanche 1 certification course at the end of February!  The course will take place over a 3 day 2 night hut trip in the Tornak Hut in Idaho’s Smoky Mountains. This is a great opportunity to receive your level 1 certification and take part in a fun women’s only hut trip!

  1. Must register by December, 25th 2014!

  2. When: February 27, 28 and March 1 – 3 days 2 nights

  3. Where: Tornak Hut – Smoky Mountains, Idaho

  4. Cost: $550 – includes food, lodging in the hut, course book and instruction

The following is a brief course description from Sun Valley Trekking…

This course is designed as an introduction to avalanche phenomena as it relates to backcountry skiers and snowboarders. The course format will emphasize practical avalanche awareness and safety measures through hands-on learning. The entire course will be based in the backcountry at one of Sun Valley Trekking’s deluxe huts. Group food, lodging, course book, and instruction are included in trip cost.

Students who complete this course should be able to:

  1. Identify avalanche terrain

  2. Apply safe route finding techniques

  3. Identify basic snow crystal types

  4. Identify strong and weak layers in the snowpack

  5. Test the snowpack to determine stability/instability

  6. Apply safe group travel and decision making techniques

  7. Make basic backcountry weather forecasts

  8. Plan a safe route on a topographic map

  9. Perform quick and efficient avalanche rescues

This is a backcountry course that will require intermediate skiing/boarding ability and good physical fitness. No prior avalanche training is necessary, although some preliminary reading is recommended.
